Marketplace is a suite of business shows heard on public radio stations around the country. From 2011 to 2016, I was a frequent producer on the evening flagship program hosted by Kai Ryssdal. I've also produced Marketplace Tech and new podcast initiatives, including Politics Inside Out and The Uncertain Hour. These are some of my favorite stories and projects I've produced at Marketplace.

Politics Inside Out

A short-form pop-up podcast to surround the 2016 political conventions was the brainchild of DC bureau chief Andrea Seabrook. Producers Katie Long, Bridget Bodnar and I worked with Andrea and her team on the ground to write, edit, craft and sound design this quick-turn series. Where the political podcast world is full of headline coverage and analysis, we focused on the impact of policies proposed at the conventions on the people who lived in the communities where they were being held.

Eli Broad

In my first months working with Kai Ryssdal and Marketplace's stellar production whizzes I pitched and produced this story on billionaire arts patron Eli Broad. The namesake museum that houses the Eli and Edythe Broad collection was still in planning and approval phases. Surrounded by famous works of art and architectural prototypes of some of LA's best-known buildings, we had another question in mind: why was Broad so interested in charter school-based education?

Diplo

In the fall of 2014, Diplo already had a pile of Grammys and a tabloid-ready reputation. But as EDM exploded onto the pop music scene, the idea of the artist/DJ/producer was new to many Americans. Nine months before the New York Times published that great interactive interview with Justin Bieber, Skrillex and Diplo, Kai Ryssdal sat down with Diplo to talk about how artists make their living in this highly hyphenated version of the music industry. (Also my favorite interview prep I've written to date).

You Hate My Job

When Marketplace senior producer Sitara Nieves (now executive producer) asked me to brainstorm some loathsome professions for a series called You Hate My Job, we quickly came up with a long list of dentists, debt collectors, DMV staff and more. As someone who can't seem to read a parking meter or street signs, I was hungry to meet a real live parking enforcement officer. Officer Jenny Day took us for a ridealong, and didn't even object to being called a meter maid.
